Abstract | Language acquisition and development by the child is explored and related to other areas of maturation and the environment. The nine chapters of the book are: I. Historical Perspective (discusses the student's attitude toward language, the effects of his attitude, factors that might hamper the study of language, and, briefly, various theories of language origin); II. Language Acquisition--Learned Versus Innate (a general discussion of how the child acquires language); III. Speech Production and Language Units (differentiates speech and language); IV. Neurophysiological Development (an overview of the neurological mechanism necessary for speech and language development); V. Language and Cognition (traces and expansion of sensory information and relates sensory information to linguistic development and the thinking process); VI. Psychosocial Perception (explores social maturity as related to child's physical need for independence); VII. Dialect: Considerations of Difference (explores relationship of cultural values and language development, and considers the historical implications of research involving dialect and language differences as well as the importance of studying bidialectal "switching" and bilingual "translation" activities); VIII. Evaluation of Language Development (considers test procedures and test instruments); and IX. The Child from Birth to Age Five (describes the child as a communicator and discusses him in terms of responsibilities in the role of listener and the role of speaker at various stages of development).
