Abstract | This document is an English-language abstract (approximately 1,500 words) of a report on an investigation started in 1957 by Martti Takala and Penti Pitkanen at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, to examine the connections between physical fitness and other measures of individual difference. The report deals with the structure and development of physical fitness and its educational significance. The following problems were examined: (1) to what extent does the structure of physical fitness of Finnish school correspond to that found in other countries? (2) What changes are found in the structure of physical fitness if age, sex, locality, and type of school are varied? (3) How valid are the factors and primary variables, as compared with teachers' marks in gymnastics and athletics? (4) To what extent is the variation in physical performance accounted for by grade level, locality, or type of school? Several age groups in elementary and junior high school were selected for testing and analysis of height and weight, school grades, physical growth, power exercises, endurance, agility, and strength. Variable correlation tables in the report provide data to support the general proposition that there is consistent integration of motor factors with increasing age. (Author/GDB) |
