AbstractThe proceedings of an Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Seminar on computer science in engineering education are presented. Ways and means of introducing computer science to engineers and means of applying results of past experience are discussed. There are seven major papers presented: (1) The Experience of the Darmstadt Technische Hochshule (includes discussion of engineering education curriculum and the role of computer science); (2) Introduction to the Algorithmic Language ((Algol 60)) (includes instructions for computation, introduction and delivery, plus a list of lectures and exercises offered at Darmstadt); (3) The Teaching of Mechanical Data Processing (discusses both analogue and digital processing); (4) The Effect of Computer Science on Engineering Mathematics (includes list of mathematical topics of value to computer designers and users); (5) Introducing the Computer into the Universities of Italy and its Effect on the Teaching of Mathematics and Other Disciplines; and (6) The Work of the International Computation Centre; and (7) Courses in Mathematics for Engineers in the United Kingdom. Special contributions include discussion of computer science as it is presently used at Hamburg University, The Paris Faculte Des Sciences and the CNRS (National Council for Scientific Research) in Sweden and in Ireland.
