| Abstract | The increasing attention focused on the problem of preparing university and college administrators prompted the Association for Higher Education to convene a group of 250 educators to consider what guidelines should be adopted. Nine panelists led the discussion on how to meet the need for professional highly skilled administrators. Organized training efforts, which were described, have been weakened to date by the lack of coordination among sponsoring groups, lack of systematic evaluation, and lack of research. Three competencies are required: professional skill, comprehensive understanding, and political insight in the Aristotelian sense. The panel considered basic issues of how to find and train administrators for specific posts and what qualities were most important for leadership in academic administration. Although administration is a demanding academic specialization, the idea of special training for potential college presidents is not universally accepted or put into practice. The topic debated at greatest length was whether administrators need to have a scholarly background. A national conference to develop a program of joint action on the preparation of administrators was recommended. (JS) |
