AbstractEXERCISES AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS TO HELP STUDENTS INTERPRET MEANING WHEN THEY READ AND TO MAKE MEANINGS CLEAR AND PRECISE WHEN THEY WRITE OR SPEAK FORM THE BASIS FOR THE INSTRUCTIONS SUGGESTED IN THIS THREE-PART TEACHER'S CURRICULUM GUIDE ON RHETORIC FOR NINTH-GRADERS. THE FIRST PART DEALT WITH WORDS, MEANINGS, AND CONTEXTS, AND EMPHASIZED SEMANTICS AS A WAY TO HELP STUDENTS WRITE CLEARLY AND PRECISELY. THE SECOND PART DEALT WITH PRINCIPLES OF FORMING GENERALIZATIONS. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AND ASSIGNMENTS FOR SPEAKING WERE INTENDED TO HELP THE STUDENT DESCRIBE PHENOMENA. ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURAL PATTERNS AND STYLES APPROPRIATE TO DIFFERENT SPEAKING PURPOSES WERE PROVIDED IN THE EXERCISES. THE THIRD PART DEALT WITH WAYS AND PURPOSES OF WRITING AND DISCUSSING DIFFERENT POINTS-OF-VIEW. THE EXERCISES PROVIDED A SOMEWHAT LESS RIGID WRITING EXPERIENCE THAN THE PREVIOUS MATERIALS WHICH DEMANDED CONFORMITY TO EXACTING STYLES AND DEFINITIONS. THE EXERCISES WERE ALSO INTENDED TO REMIND THE STUDENT, BY STIMULATING HIS IMAGINATION, OF THE GAINS POSSIBLE BY RESPECTING OTHER POINTS OF VIEW. THE STUDENT VERSION IS ED 010 805.
