Bourdieu's concept of the habitus lacks specifications on how the (gendered) habitus is formed and incorporated. This theoretical gap is addressed by focusing on the father-son relationship and its impact on the incorporation of gendered habitual dispositions by male adolescents. For this purpose, we propose applying the Bourdieusian term of inheritance. Based on deep hermeneutic analyses of interview data, we show the highly ambivalent and conflictual processes of inheriting and adolescent constructions of masculinities which are oriented towards the paternal model. Emotions and emotional practices play a vital role within these processes. The article argues that besides the peer group the father-son relationship manifests as a crucial sphere regarding the incorporation of masculinities. |
