Abstract | This sub-chapter examines and provides an overview of the religious dimension of the catechisms and primers considered in this volume. It draws on the separate national and regional articles collected in this volume (but does not refer them individually). Of course, the teaching of religion and of reading have gone hand in hand in many areas of Europe (and beyond). The link was given more emphasis by the Protestant Reformation, starting in Germany, but soon spread, and divided into Lutheranism, Reformed, Anglican, and other denominations. The Protestant Reformation was succeeded by a Catholic Counter-Reformation, which itself was also based strongly on reading. |
