Abstract | The purpose of this study was to review the literature relevant to adolescent girls' experiences in school based curricular physical activity (SBCPA) according to self- determination theory. Self-determination theory (SDT) has enjoyed increasing popularity in physical and health education (PHE) and physical activity (PA) research during the past decade. Self-determination theory states that for students to be optimally motivated for SBCPA, it is critical to support the satisfaction of their innate psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness by structuring the learning environment to be autonomy-supportive and conducive to creating solid relationships. In this literature review, we first provide an overview of SDT. Second, we discuss gender as a construct. Third, we discuss students' experiences of autonomy. competence, and relatedness within PHE and other curricular PA programs. Finally, we provide pedagogical implications on the basis of the reviewed SDT research and future directions for SDT research in SBCPA. (Autor). |
