Abstract | German Turnen has an over two-hundred-year tradition. This form of body culture including its organizational form in the so-called Turnvereine (turner societies) spread worldwide. This paper will first concentrate on the rise and importance of gymnastics and Turnen as the specific form of body culture in Germany and in the Turnvereine but also in physical education as part of general education in schools. In a second step, examples of Turnen abroad will be provided. The main focus will be on England and the United States, followed by some brief insights into the situation in South America (Brazil) and Africa (Namibia). (Autor). |
