Abstract | Nonnative speakers of a given language are easily recognized based on their "accents". In the article the author focuses on two groups of nonnative speakers of German from the U.S. Subjects in one group spent an academic year at a German university and those in the other studied German at a university in the U.S. during the same year. Native speakers of German who judged their speech based their ratings on the native-likeness of prosodic (i.e., rhythm, stress, intonation) aspects. Results show that the immersed subjects improved significantly more. (Verlag, adapt.). |
