Abstract | The essay calls for a critical attitude towards the popular notion of dictionaries as objective authorities on language issues. The various monolingual English reference works analysed in the paper show strong anthropocentric biases against animals, concentrating unduly on human-centred features within the definitions. Anthropocentric language structures, e.g. a focus on the animals' utility or harmfulness, are problematic because they are believed to influence our perceptions and even our behaviour. Linguists should therefore create a greater public awareness of these biases and promote the use of an ecologically more neutral language. (Verlag, adapt.). |
