| Abstract | Valency information is of crucial importance for non-native speakers when it comes to the production of text. The article compares the strategies which are employed for the encoding of such information in monolingual English learners' dictionaries with those used in bilingual German-English dictionaries. It emerges firstly that both types of dictionaries operate under very different conditions and secondly follow different traditions with respect to the encoding of valency information; it is probably fair to say that the constant urge for innovation and improvement which has characterised the development of syntactic information in English learners' dictionaries in the last decades has left their bilingual counterparts largely unaffected. The discussion of different encoding strategies is complemented by a statistical study, in which the amount of valency information given for English verbs, adjectives and nouns in the English-German part of the three large bilingual dictionaries considered is compared to the results of an earlier study which dealt with four major English learners' dictionaries. The statistical comparison shows that although English learners' dictionaries can be said to be superior with respect to the encoding of valency information, bilingual dictionaries do not necessarily lag behind when it comes to the amount of information given.
