Abstract | The article investigates the importance that current German secondary school curricula ascribe to non-formal historical education. Based on a qualitative content analysis, it holds that even though non-formal historical learning has for some time come to the attention of history didactics, curricula have not yet reached a point where 'non-formal' exists as a category that could be used to structure the field of learning and shed light on a plethora of educational activities beyond the school system. Instead, the ambiguous term 'außerschulisch' ('extra-school'/'extracurricular') is prevalent, which covers all sorts of activities beyond the school premises be they organized by the school or in cooperation with non-school institutional partners. Only those institutions that have long been entrusted with historical learning, i. e. museums, archives, and sites of commemoration, have yet found a place in the curricula. Other non-formal educational agents hardly ever come into view. |
