| Abstract | The outbreak of the First World War caused strong reactions among modern philologists. This can be observed in the relevant journals: how was one supposed to deal with 'enemy' language in subsequent school classes? Ideas ranged from the complete abolition of the teaching of modern languages to a rigorous alteration of lesson content aimed at better understanding 'the enemy'. The majority of modern philologists were unanimous however in the belief that 'business as usual' was not an option. The war years in the period immediately following were characterised by turmoil and upheaval, indeed a kind of identity crisis in modern languages. The most significant effect of the shifting geopolitical power balance was felt in the importance of English teacing; above all the entry of the USA into the war, heralding the new international role of that country, comes to mind here.
