| Abstract | The CEFR of 2001 lead to a renewed reflection and integration of mediation activities in foreign language teaching, but from today's perspective, the underlying construct was a rather rudimentary one. In Germany, the CEFR introduced mediation activities into foreign language teaching by way of transfering texts from one language to another in the sense of analogous, context-and adressee-appropriate transmission. This has been more favourably received than in other European education systems. Schools practice, educational administration and foreign language research in Germany have presented numerous approaches to the development and evaluation of mediation competence over the past 15 years. These efforts appear to have been neglected in the creation of the new Companion Volume. Against this background, this article will (1) recapitulate the construct of mediation in the CEFR 2001, (2) introduce the construct, scales and descriptors in the Companion Volume 2018 and (3) evaluate this approach with reference to essential developments in foreign language research in Germany between 2001-2018.
