Abstract	Illustrations are essentials elements in modern language textbooks. In the evaluation of textbooks, they are important clues as to their multiple functions. The essay gives an impression of the different characters of illustrations (photos, graphics, drawing etc.) used in teaching French as a foreign language. It shows different functions in which illustrations are used i.e. clarifying grammatical structures, demonstrating unfamiliar ways of life, explaining the significance of words, supporting the teacher in explaining difficult matters, grammatical and otherwise, and to enhance pupils motivation to learn. It compares and critically evaluates the illustrations found in two manuals to teach French in secondary schools, namely À plus! Französisch für Gymnasien (Berlin: Cornelsen, 2004) and Découvertes für den schulischen Französischunterricht (Stuttgart u.a.: Klett 2004). The illustrations of the first volumes of these textbooks are evaluated and suggestions are made for prospective textbooks.
