The author explains the principle of self-governance of research, according to which researchers manage their affairs research oriented. That means they develop research topics, concepts, and funding programmes. He illustrates the principle of self-governance for the Leibniz Association (one of the big German research organisations with 91 independent, no-university research institutions). This is done by citing the examples of the Leibniz Research Alliances, the Leibniz ScienceCampi, and the recently suggested model of the Leibniz Research Institutes. While Leibniz Research Alliances bring together the complementary competences of Leibniz institutions, Leibniz ScienceCampi are an instrument of regional networking and collaboration with the universities. For the consolidation of outstanding research projects of universities in conjunction with Leibniz institutions, the author recommends to establish Leibniz University Institutes, which are able to support universities to enhance major research priorities.
