| Abstract | The paper reflects on the question that the Reformation is an ambiguous occurrence already in its origins and even more so in its reception. (1.1.). The author proposes to avoid crude definitions of the Reformation's nature which he identifies in the EKD paper "Rechtfertigung und Freiheit" but rather to see the ambiguity of the Reformation not as a threat but as an opportunity (1.2.). Following the interpretation of the Reformation as "discovery of the subject" by Hegel and Troeltsch he identifies the issue of human identity as the question that Reformation theology deals with. It is a key question of Western Christianity that not only Luther addresses but that can be traced back to Bernard of Clairvaux and Augustine and is related to the radicalization of Penance. The idea that self-knowledge and knowledge of God belong together and that talking of God means interpreting one's own identity is deeply rooted in Western culture. Thus, the Reformation can be seen a specific interpretation of a universal human question. A significant cultural impact of the Reformation might be the radicalization of the Sacrament of Penance which shapes the Western culture of self-reflection. The human question concerning one's own identity is the guiding question of Western Christianity and of the current secular self-understanding with which the Reformers deal when speaking of judgement (!) and justiflcation in a varied but specific way. |
