The proof of the ortho/para conversion of hydrogen, the discovery of tritium in the atmosphere, the synthesis of heavy water, the construction of isotope separation plants, experiments on the chain reaction of uranium, and also various developments in photochemistry can all be attributed to the work of the Austro-German physical chemist Paul Harteck. As a member of the "Uranverein" [Urainum Society] Harteck was arguably the most active promoter of the development of a "Uranium machine" (that is a nuclear reactor). |
