| Abstract | Within Christian theology the message of Jesus' death on the cross has to be interpreted in accordance with New Testament texts, it has to be compatible with theological traditions, and comprehensible in contemporary discourses. Early Christians combined the resurrection story with the capital punishment of crucifixion and thus proclaimed Gods action in both of Jesus death and life. This connection had to be interpreted, however, and there were various attempts to make sense of it: Jesus' death could be understood in relation to the fate of Old Testament prophets, to traditions of reconciliation, to the background of Old Testament sacrifice rituals, to the idea of atonement, to the Greek notion of giving one's life for someone else etc. All of these attempts used metaphorical language in order to understand the most disturbing fact of the crucifixion. Later interpretations restricted this variety of approaches. The medieval church promoted a concept of atonement and reparation, which became most influental in the ongoing interpretation and still is in contemporary discussions. Present attempts to turn down the idea of atonement are not in line with New Testament insights, however. That Jesus died "for us" is not a matter of substitution in the first place, but a promise of relation. As such it can be related to present time experiences. |
