| Abstract | The statement "Jesus Christ died for us" is indispensable, although it is necessary to interpret this fundamental confession. The New Testament describes the salvific power of the crucifixion metaphorically. These metaphors cannot be eliminated, however. They point to the ultimate conflict between divine love and human sin and to the ultimate reconciliation including (a) the divine self-sacrifice and (b) the human self-recognition as a sinful person. This self-recognition is dramatic and transcends moral insight, because the sinful person is subject to transpersonal powers produced by human sin. In the light of the resurrection, we are liberated from this bondage by the power of divine love concentrated in the story of the passion and crucifixion. |
