Abstract | With individual plurilingualism ("M+2") as the desired aim of European language policy, schools and especially modern foreign language departments have been asked to facilitate the development of competencies in several languages. As English is the first foreign language for almost all German pupils and since its important role as a global and European lingua franca cannot be neglected, it has become clear that the foundations for plurilingualism should be established in English. In order to substantiate the possible contribution of English language classes to plurilingual education, learners' as well as teachers' experiences in this area were surveyed in an empirical study. The article introduces a PhD-project that is being undertaken at the University of Braunschweig and presents the project's main ideas and research questions as well as outlining the methodological approach.
