Abstract | The third edition of the book has been thoroughly updated and covers the writing needs of scientists starting out in their career today. Examples include developing a relationship with their advisor, writing the thesis, grant writing, presenting findings, the impacts of social media, and working with corporate entities. Additionally, for both writing and speaking, the book emphasizes the audience, and also includes chapters on communicating with non-scientists and problems that could arise for the international student or scientist working with the culture and language of the United States. With convenient, easy-to-use chapters and written in a conversational tone, this book provides practical instruction. Topics include designing visual aids, writing first drafts, reviewing and revising, communicating clearly and concisely, adhering to stylistic principles, presenting data in tables and figures, dealing with ethical and legal issues, and relating science to the lay audience. The book is an essential guide for all graduate students and for career scientists including research scientists and science practitioners, especially those involved in Biology, Agriculture, Chemistry, Engineering or Health Sciences. Communication skills are among the qualities most prized by those who hire and promote scientists. (Orig.). |
