| Abstract | Taking Gotthold Ephraim Lessings "Ring Parable" in his drama "Nathan the Wise", which is regarded as a poetically intensified synthesis of the modern concept of tolerance, as a starting point, the essay describes the 'agonal' character of tolerance. Competition (Greek: agon) between different religious options is made possible by tolerance. On the one hand, the other religions are regarded as competitors without qualifying their truth claims, on the other hand, fairness in the sense of equal terms of competition for all is assumed. By guaranteeing religious freedom, the secular state serves so to speak as an arbitrator. Christian theology gained access to this understanding of tolerance by way of the doctrine of 'imago dei' and a theological interpretation of conscience. In the face of the present pluralism and globalization, however, an agonal tolerance as Lessing had in mind is no longer sufficient today. It has rather to be developed towards a dialogic and cooperative tolerance which is necessary for living together with different religious and ideological points of view (convivence). To replace tolerance by an all-embracing acceptance, however, would not only be naive, but also dangerous. The tension between rejection and acceptance, which is constitutive for tolerance, corresponds to the tension between apologetics and syncretism, in which different approaches (F. Rosenzweig, H-M. Barth, H. Küng) can be placed. Finally, desiderata for future theological research resulting from this are pointed out. |
