Abstract | This paper examines the contemporary readings of monument building at two university campuses that experienced the "revolt of the Black athlete". The statue of Smith and Carlos will serve as the initial entry way into understanding the new cultural landscape of monuments as means of remembering and forgetting the past. The author uses the recent statue of Coach Jim Owens at the University of Washington, and the subsequent student led monument to diversity as one illustration of how the 1960s coach under fire was the individual honored in the following years, as well as the student reaction. This paper seeks to understand the ways that monuments are utilized by institutions to promote preferred versions of history in effort to re-frame their own roles in the civil rights movement.
