Abstract	The educational effectiveness of the science laboratories was researched by many science educators as well as by many PhD students over a period of more than 100 years. These were conducted in the context of both physics and chemistry learning as well as in other subjects both in secondary schools as well as in the context of the tertiary education levels. In my talk, based on several reviews as well two reviews I conducted myself in collaboration with colleagues in the USA, I will discuss issues related to goals of teaching and learning in science laboratories, problems related to researching the effectiveness of science laboratories, and problems related to professional development of science teachers aligned with their practice in schools. Finally, I will try to demonstrate ways to research the uniqueness of the science laboratory regarding learning, teaching and assessment of students achievement and progress related to their performance and ability to develop of some high-order learning skills (i.e. metacognitive).
