| Abstract | "Economic globalisation relies on a growing understanding of cultural diversity", says former Siemens manager Peter Daetz. This was also the unanimous opinion of the 120 specialists invited by the DAAD to attend a conference in Freiburg on "Regional and Cultural Studies in Germany". The benefit of regional studies had apparently never been as great as it is today. Nevertheless, the experts are concerned about the survival of their discipline in Germany. In view of the poor financial situation of the universities, they fear that savings could be made at their expense to promote "core competencies". At the same time, they find themselves confronted by academic reforms and the introduction of Bachelor's and Master's programmes. The regional studies experts want to continue to offer a first degree and to collaborate more closely in Regional Studies Centres. In addition, they look to rely on DAAD awarded scholarships to some 700 regional studies students whose academic goals extended towards all the corners of the world. (HoF/text adopted). |
