Abstract | In this article, the author investigates "the problem of out-of-field teaching - assigning teachers to teach subjects that do not match their training or education". According to the author, out-of-field teaching is "one of the least recognized ... causes ... for the problem of underqualified teachers" in the US. But, he argues, "highly qualified teachers may actually become highly unqualified if they are assigned to teach subjects for which they have little preparation". He first presents his findings on "how widespread ... out-of-field teaching" is and then discusses the causes of this problem. (DIPF/Orig./Kl.). |
