Abstract | The paper looks at Broadcast English in the changing landscape of 21st century mass media. It argues that Information Technology has radically affected human communication in a way that will durably and fundamentally have an effect on Broadcast English. With the Internet, broadcasting enters the realm of individual users, effectively bypassing the traditional, institutional gatekeepers. The article focusses on the impact that this radical technological change is likely to have on the internal variation of Broadcast English, on the one hand, and on the part that the Internet can be expected to play in the diffusion of linguistic innovation, on the other.
