| Abstract | Was in anderen Ländern selbstverständlich zum Profil und in die Lehrpläne von Hochschulen gehört, fristet in Deutschland immer noch ein Schattendasein, auch wenn zunehmend mehr Licht einfällt: die wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung. (HoF/Text übernommen). German companies invest billions of euros every year in the expertise of their employees. But most of this money flows directly into the tills of private academies and business schools. German colleges and universities that offer programs for working people are still in the minority. While many of them act as one-stop schools, institutes of higher learning in other countries have adapted their systems to life-long learning and have a number of programs that are tailored to the business sector. In Germany, on the other hand, conventional career patterns are still the rule: research work and long publication lists are rewarded, but active involvement in practical work or in training are not. The government has introduced a large-scale qualification program for encouraging workers to study or coninue training. The Bologna accord, aimed at standardizing master's and bachelor's degrees throughout Europe, is an opportunity for massive expansion of adult education in science. At least, so say the German Rectors' Converence and many others in industry and employers' associations; together they have developed a 7-point plan for mining the untapped potential benefits of continuing educations. The Berlin University for Professional Studies, a joint effort by higher education and industry, will be opening in the near future. (HoF/text adopted). |
