A career as a teacher has been something rather rare up to now at German universities. Research, not didactic quality, has remained the primary criterion for a professor's reputation. But a lively debate is now going on as to what makes good teaching and how to bolster the importance of teaching alongside research. Only about a third of university students, and a slightly higher percentage of students at the universities of applied sciences, are satisfied with the quality of their professor's teaching. But what really gives politicians a fright is the high number of drop-outs. Nearly one-third of students leave the university without graduating. There is no lack of suggestions for better teaching. They range from "lecturer" positions to "teaching professorships". Recently an "initiative for Excellence in Teaching" was started to spread the message that good teaching is worth working towards. The initiative will provide funding to promote young teachers, to establish centres for teacher training in higher education, and to develop concepts for the future at the international level. Another suggestion is the establishment of a German Teaching Foundation, as a counterpart to the German Research Foundation, to promote innovative teaching projects. (HoF/text adopted). |
