| Abstract | Bis das Wissen aus deutschen Hochschulen zu neuen Produkten und Arbeitsplätzen führt, vergeht viel Zeit. Darin sind sich Politiker und Wirtschaftsvertreter einig. Noch sind die meisten Kooperationsprojekte zwischen Hochschulen und Wirtschaftsunternehmen zu kurzfristig und punktuell. Doch das soll sich ändern. (HoF/Text übernommen). Education and business: how they go together is a hot topic in Germany. Politicians and entrepreneurs complain that it takes too long for new knowledge from colleges and universities to lead to innovative products, and to job. But things have changed between higher education and the business sector: the financial volume of joint research projects has tripled within twelve years, attaining more than 1.32 billion. Among these co-operative schemes, individual projects have been less successful than long-term, strategically oriented partnerships that are managed professionally by permanent liaisons on both sides. This form of co-operation is on the rise, a study has found. The list of co-operation projects is diverse. For example, Airbus Deutschland has founded a joint technology centre with TU Hamburg-Harburg, and VW has a similar partnership with TU Braunschweig. Furthermore, the chemical giant BASF is currently building a catalysis laboratory at the University of Heidelberg. By the end of 2007, Siemens will have set up twelve Centres for Knowledge Interchange at German universities. More often, long-term co-operation takes the form of endowed professorships.
