| Abstract | Zwölf Monate von Archäologie über Philosophie bis zur Vor- und Frühgeschichte: Die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften rücken in Deutschland ins Rampenlicht. Die breite Öffentlichkeit soll erfahren, welch leistungsstarke Vielfalt die rund 100 Disziplinen bieten. Es sind Schätze, auf die eine moderne Gesellschaft nicht verzichten kann - so die Botschaft im "Jahr der Geisteswissenschaften". (HoF/Text übernommen). This year in Germany the humanities and social sciences are stepping into the spotlight. The general public is to learn about the powerful diversity of the hundred or so disciplines in these fields. These are riches that a modern society must treasure: this is the message of the "Year of the Humanities". Although academic performance and quality in many subjects are undisputed, and draw many international researchers to Germany, scholars in the humanities are not satisfied. Too much research funding is devoted to the sciences; workloads in the humanities are extremely high; and small departments are extremely high; and small departments are in danger of extinction. In fact, about 350,000 beginning humanities students - one fourth of all freshers - are taught by only a tenth of the total academic staff, including only about 5500 professors. Among the new strategies for the promotion of the humanities are international research collegiums. Inspired in part by British and American "institutes for advanced study", these collegiums intensify academic dialogue while allowing individual scholars to concentrate on their own long-term research. The strategic goal is to develop "visible centres of top-level research". (HoF/Text übernommen). |
