| Abstract | The article... analyzes the social significance of access to schooling for adolescent girls, a recent phenomenon in a community in Jordan, although there is a near-universal rate of high school entry today. [The author] analyzes the effects of access to this space for adolescent girls who have limited access to other places. She argues that while the school plays its role as an institution of social reproduction, in this case with gendered patterns, it also provides a legitimate forum for participation in public life, a forum for debate and discussion about a girl's place in society, and potentially transformative opportunities. She argues that even a school situated in a limited geographic space provides a forum to articulate local views of larger tensions in the context of the state's discourse on nation building and modernization in the global contemporary context, which is in turn intertwined with a discourse on preserving traditions that have defined women's issues.
