Abstract	The aims of the study were: - to identify the perceived sources of stress and consequent stress levels within the profession, - to assess the psychological well-being of university staff, - to explore the possible presence of differences in stress levels and well-being between sub-groups, i. e. gender and job type, - to assess the impact of occupational stress on a range of work-related issues, - to provide university staff working in higher education with an opportunity to express their views on a number of issues relating to personal experiences of job-related stress, on the recent changes in their institutions (and in the sector as a whole), and on the impact of these changes. The target sample for this survey comprised 2.000 academic and academic-related staff employed within the old and new universities and other higher education institutions in the United Kingdom.
