Abstract	When launching the Council of Europe Modern Languages Project: "Language Learning for European Citizenship" the Education Committee identified a number of educational sectors and themes for priority treatment. In the course of the Project, which was conducted between 1989 and 1996, work in these areas was intensively pursued, partly by studies commissioned from leading experts in the field, but mainly in a series of "new-style" workshops, attended by colleagues professionally active in the fields concerned. Geneviève Zarate has played a very significant part in raising awareness of this dimension of language learning and in research into its better understanding, developing the concept of "interculturality" as an educational objective. Using a foreign language in a way which shows understanding of its sociocultural dimension does not mean abandoning one's own cultural identity in order to become a carbon copy of native speakers, but rather developing a more complex personality in which both cultures interact, enabling the learner to bridge the cultural gap.
