Abstract | When people use a foreign language for their everyday business, in their own country or abroad, they are not only using grammar and vocabulary to encode and exchange information: they engage with other people as individuals and as representatives of the societies and cultures they embody. Language learners thus need not only grammatical accuracy and fluency, but also a sociocultural competence, which includes an ability to relate to others, a knowledge of their way of life, an awareness of self and of how others see us, a capacity to enter and "discover" new situations of intercultural exchange. This book contains two papers which describe and define sociocultural competence. The authors discuss how sociocultural competence can be documented and assessed in order to enable language learners to make full use of their potential for intercultural communication, essential to European citizenship.
