Abstract	[The author] gives a brief overview of the rich material heritage of the oldest university of Europe and illustrates it in some detail through the Bologna Student Museum and the University's Historical Archives. The Student Museum is dedicated to an important part of the academic community, but at the same time a group that has not always been well considered by the senior members of that community. The Historic Archives of the University of Bologna are typical in that they are faced with the problems of split collections and a lack of specialised staff, and also by being faced with the challenge of preserving its heritage by using modern information technology as well as to adapting to serving a university which has grown dramatically over the past generation.
