Abstract | [The author] directly addresses the question of whether universities constitute a part of the cultural heritage and identity of Europe. The Middle Ages were a period of the major innovations of its day. Moreover, their origin was closely linked to the cultural environment of the Europe at the time, and this was a European rather than a local or national pehnomenon. The term university itself implies universality, both in terms of the fields of knowledge covered and in terms of geography and culture. The European aspect was also evident in the high mobility of scholars - the peregrinatio. (DIPF/orig.). |
