Abstract	This paper "focuses on the function of the educational system to eliminate any unfair inequality between men and women by reviewing the directives against gender discrimination proposed by the European Union." First, various action programmes for equality and their application to education are described, then the paper about a strategy framework for equality is analysed. Next, an initiative for integrating equal opportunities in the SOCRATES-Programme and initiatives of integrating equal opportunities in all Community policies and actions, and some new directives are described. The author then discusses models based on women and men relationships - and the prejudices contained therein - and their influence on education models. Similarly, the conceptions of paternity and maternity are regarded, because "the main problem the European woman faces in the labour market is no longer, in most cases, her lesser qualifications, but rather prejudices with maternity and the reconciliation of working and famliy life."
