Abstract	The transition countries in Central Asia were influenced by China as well as the Arab countries before they became part of Soviet Union. The political, economic and educational changes are accounted for in this chapter. These countries had, in relation to their economic level, a highly developed education system that deteriorated during the 1990s.... With the collapse of the Soviet Union all [these countries] started to restructure their education systems according to the international model of privatization, choice and decentralization. The content of education ... was nationalized immediately, while the structure of the educational system was gradually changed in some countries from the mid 1990s.... However, rates of enrollment decreased and dropout rate increased in all countries, at least until the end of the 1990s. (DIPF/ Orig.).
