Abstract | The educational systems in [the Eastern European] countries were rather similar during the socialist period. Several countries show a contradictory policy pattern since 1990. Aspects of the pre-war education stand in contrast to the innovations of the same type as those decided upon in the OECD countries.... The education systems of central and Eastern Europe, when free from the Soviet pressure, had to adopt to the same forces as those in the West: on the one hand, internationalization, globalization and competition, and, on the other hand, national as well as subnational (ethnic or local demands). In addition to this, educational policies also were formulated to eliminate what were seen as undesirable remnants from the Communist period, but at the same time maintain what was good in the old system.
