Abstract	Research into such notions as the 'hidden curriculum', which have engaged the interest of many researchers of Western education systems in recent years, was highly restricted in communist systems - at least with regard to discussion of socialist approaches to education. It is significant, therefore, that the author notes the importance of the concept of the hidden curriculum to studies of gender representation in Hungarian school textbooks. With regard to the question of gender, she demonstrates that attempts to leave the communist past behind are not necessarily accompanied by change in more deeply rooted social and cultural traditions. The negative effects of the officially proclaimed liberation of women during the communist period, for example, seem to have led to a backlash against notions of true equality in post-communist Hungary, a situation that, the author contends, is reflected in the materials used to educate the young.
