| Abstract | Nowadays the majority of academics is driven by all forces of the market. The authors analyse the situation in Australia and draw conclusions. They point out that for the beginner, unaware of the complexities of university politics, the frustrations are marginal; for the end of academic career they are consuming. The academic who is in a leadership, head of school/faculty/university position is not able to be aligned with any particular stage of career. Once placed in the position of leadership the point they are at in their career is irrelevant. What determines the actions and motivations of the leader is the politics of the situation. This means not only the internal university politics, but also the external politics.- This contribution was submitted by the authors as a paper for the 25th ATEE Annual Conference in Barcelona 2000.
