Abstract | One main argument for parental choice of state school is "that competition between schools as producers of educational outputs results in a better performance by schools.... The English school system continues to provide an important and relevant example for studying the effects of promoting competition between schools.... The purpose of this paper is to examine the arguments and empirical evidence that a greater degree of competition between schools for students leads to higher school performance in terms of student academic achievement." The paper draws on data of a longitudinal study from 1990 to 1998 of over 300 schools ("ICOSS study") and is structured as follows: 1) theoretical propositions concerning the link between competition and performance, 2) evidence of this link from the ICOSS study, 3) evidence of this link at the local level of the school quasi-market, 4) evidence at the level of the school, 5) qualitative evidence on headteacher modes of engagement with quasi-markets.
