Abstract | The book compares the effects of the far-reaching reforms that have taken place in three related systems of higher education - those of Britain, Australia and Hong Kong. In each of these systems the binary line, established a generation ago, has been repositioned and an unprecendented number of institutions have acquired the title "university". Using both systems overviews and case studies of individual institutions, the book considers: the extent to which the creation of unitary systems of higher education has encouraged expansion and diversification, the extent to which the new universities are developing identities of their own, the response of the new unversities to the internationalisation of higher education, the future of the new universities and unitary systems of higher education.
