Abstract | This book presents theoretical and empirical work on adaptation in higher education. It describes and analyzes the state of the art, and situates the findings within this framwork. First it shows the importance and need for new forms of governance, management, and leadership structures at universities that are being driven by environmental changes. Second, it provides case examples of US institutions (New York University, University of Michigan, and the University of California at Berkeley) which are identified as comparatively adaptive and innovative, and European institutions (Universita Bocconi, Universität St. Gallen, and Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien) which are trying to improve their adaptive capacity. Third, it presents a thorough review of different theories of organizational and higher education adaptation, and a research design using qualitative methods for studying different higher education institutions. Inhalt: 1. The changing nature of the university environment. - 2. Theories of organizational and higher education adaptation. - 3. Design of the empirical study of university adaptation. - 4. Case studies of US and European universities. - 5. Towards a theory of adaptation in higher education. (HoF/Text übernommen). |
