Abstract | The contributions to this book come from three seminans which were concerned with the development of research capability in education, as a means of increasing the volume and adequacy of knowledge available for policy-making in developing countries.... Just coming over the horizon of the globalization train are fundamental shifts in how knowledge is produced and by whom, and how it is shared and utilized. Some of these changes are already visible in the physical sciences, as well as in educational research. The university, which once saw itself as prime if not sole source of new knowledge, now competes in a buyer' s market in which traditional canons of rigour and public access are given short shrift. Shifts in the site and methods of knowledge production also affect networks constructed over years for purpose of sharing knowledge between researchers and policy-makers and across national and cultural boundaries. The problems this entails are most keenly felt in countries only now developing a capacity for knowledge production. This monograph analyzes these issues from several perspectives. (DIPF/orig.). |
