Abstract	This paper focuses on childhood as a social construction and on children as a social category. This category is a constant social phenomenon though its members come and go, the membership may vary and the conditions of childhood may shift from one generation to another. The focus is on children as the subject of social enquiry. This, to a large extent, means a perspective on children as social actors, whose own perspectives on their life circumstances are of crucial interest for an understanding of what childhood is about.... The social construction of childhood is still, to a large extent, the result of adult decision-making and adult organising, especially that of their parents. Accordingly this paper ist a description of parenthood just as much as of childhood. The author's focus is on new ways of life in Sweden, because Sweden has been to the fore in many of the processes of social change in childhood an family life. She describes firstly the demographic and socio-cultural shifts. Then she characterises the changes in gender roles after childbirth and the further parenting strategies in the dual-earner family. The following chapter turns to the childrens' perspective on working parents. Finally she describes Swedish childhood under the condition of fading affluence. (DIPF/orig./ Kr.).
