Abstract	Educational expansion invariably involves the diversification of student populations, especially in terms of the distribution of ability and talent. The incorporation of a more diverse range of students in educational systems poses a major social dilemma: How can societies effectively serve the educational needs of increasingly heterogeneous student populations while, at the same time, encouraging individual achievement on the principle of equity? ... The book is divided into six sections, each focusing on different aspects of the equality-equity dilemma. The first section examines, in a general way, the relationship in educational systems between the structural principles and different patterns of social justice. The second and third sections refer to the impact of the school and family contexts on those same variables. The fourth section puts the relationship between the nature of the educational agencies and social justice in a cross-cultural comparative perspective. The fifth section concentrates on the Israeli context ... The final section deals with on contrasting strategies ... with which societies cope with the dilemma of finding an optimal balance between equity and equality. (DIPF/orig.).
